NYCMER Strategic Plan

Help Shape the Future at NYCMER!

We’re excited to announce that NYCMER is in the process of creating a Strategic Plan, and we need your input! Your feedback will play a crucial role in shaping our goals over the next few years.

Whether you're a longtime member or a new face in the community, your voice matters. This is your chance to help guide the direction of our organization and ensure that we are focused on what truly matters to our members.

The Strategic Plan is a roadmap for NYCMER’s future, setting the direction for our programs, events, and initiatives. Your feedback will help us create a plan that aligns with your needs and vision for the community!

We’ve created a short, easy survey that will only take a few minutes of your time, but will have a lasting impact on our future. Whether or not you’re currently an active member, we invite everyone to share their thoughts – your feedback will guide us in creating a vibrant, dynamic community that serves everyone.

About the NYCMER Board

The Conference Committee provides a great opportunity to connect with colleagues, network, discuss best practices in the field, and, most importantly, help plan the Annual Conference.

Plus, Conference Committee members receive a complimentary ticket to the conference, as a thank you for all their hard work.

Conference Committee requirements:

Internship

Apply to be the NYCMER Intern!

The deadline for 2025-2026 internship applications has passed. Applications that were submitted by September 26, 2025 are currently under review.

The application form for NYCMER's next internship will be available on this page in late summer 2026.

The New York City Museum Educators Roundtable (NYCMER) is a forum for museum education professionals to address issues of museum and educational interest through workshops, seminars, and conferences. The internship position is a fantastic networking opportunity for anyone looking to enter or grow in the field of museum education. The successful applicant will work closely with students and professionals representing a variety of levels of experience and museums of various disciplines throughout NYC and the surrounding region. They will participate in discussions related to this field, and help NYCMER to continue to provide thoughtful and engaging professional development opportunities to local educators.

The intern will work with members of the NYCMER Board and will take an active role in the planning and organization of the NYCMER Annual Conference and assisting with special projects.

As an applicant, you should have some background in museum education, either coursework or professional work, and be interested in pursuing a career in museum education. You must be self-motivated, have excellent communication and organizational skills, and have the ability to work collaboratively with different members of the board as well as NYCMER members and partnering organizations. Priority will be given to candidates based in New York City.

Time commitment is October 2024 – June 2025. Weekly hours will vary; evening availability is required. A stipend of $1,350 per semester ($2,700 total) is available for this position.

Application materials:

  • Prepare an uploadable version of your resume/CV
  • Prepare a cover letter detailing your interest in the position and the NYCMER organization, your background in museum/education/related areas, and your hopes/plans for the future.
  • Identify and alert two people who will provide recommendations for you.
  • These should be colleagues, teachers, or other peers who can speak to your professional skills and interests.
  • If needed, we will contact them directly through email with specific questions.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the NYCMER VP, Jonathan Milard, at vicepresident@nycmer.org

NYCMER Bylaws

Last year, the Governance Committee updated the NYCMER Bylaws. At the April 7, 2020 Board Meeting, the final iteration of the updated Bylaws was passed, and thereby enacted, by unanimous vote.

Major goals of the revision process included succession planning, reviewing and updating the election process, and inclusivity. Some highlights from each category include:

Succession-Planning

  • Increased Trustee-at-Large terms from one-year to two-year commitments with half of the Trustees elected in even calendar years, and half elected in odd calendar years.
  • Formalized years in which titled positions are elected, and staggering them to reduce high turnover on any given year.

Election Processes

  • Updated language to reflect current elections procedures (e.g., changing snail-mail verbiage to digital distribution).
  • Updated candidate requirements and supplemental materials, including position-specific questionnaires.
  • Clarified the election timeline.
  • Allowed candidates wishing to run for both titled and Trustee-at-Large positions the opportunity to do so.
  • Added process for transparency for the Board selecting appointed trustee positions.

Inclusivity

  • Use non-gendered pronouns throughout the Bylaws.
  • Updated Board representation policies to better account for institutions of all sizes and freelancers.
  • Included Accessibility and Non-Discrimination Clauses.

We welcome any questions about the new Bylaws or the process to update them. Reach out at governance@nycmer.org.
