Organization Description:

The Hudson River Museum is a preeminent cultural institution in Westchester County and the New York Metropolitan area. Situated on the banks of the Hudson River in Yonkers, New York, the HRM’s mission is to engage, inspire, and connect diverse communities through the power of the arts, sciences, and history.

The Museum offers engaging experiences for nearly every age and interest, with an ever-growing collection of American art; dynamic exhibitions that range from notable nineteenth-century paintings to contemporary art installations; Glenview, an 1877 house on the National Register of Historic Places; a state-of-the-art Planetarium; and an outdoor Amphitheater. Accredited by the American Association of Museums (AAM), the Museum is dedicated to collecting, preserving, exhibiting, and interpreting these multidisciplinary offerings, which are complemented by an array of public programs that encourage creative expression, collaboration, and artistic and scientific discovery


Position Description:

The successful candidate will join the Education Department as a crucial member of the School Programs staff, working directly under the Manager, School Programs, and with the Senior Manager, Planetarium and Science Programs, to lead hands-on workshops, in-gallery tours, and other programs for students and teachers at the Museum.


Additional responsibilities will include facilitating STEAM lessons and workshops offsite during visits to local partnership schools and administrative tasks relating to bookings, and communications with groups. The Per Diem STEAM Educator will complete paid training sessions (to be determined based on experience) with Education Staff that focus on inquiry-based learning, touring, and teaching techniques specific to the permanent collection, special exhibitions, Planetarium, and Glenview, an historic home.


The Per Diem STEAM Educator may be asked to assist in testing, contributing to, and evaluating new programs, or K-12 curriculum and have the opportunity to present planetarium programs related to accompanying workshops.

Job Requirements & Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Leading hands-on STEAM workshops (e.g. Art, Ecology, Astronomy, History) for schools and other groups, with a focus on students from Pre-K to Grade 12
  • Coordinating and conducting pre-visit and post-visit lessons at local partnership schools
  • Coordinating and facilitating the administration, set-up, and breakdown of assigned programs
  • Documenting programs for evaluation/reporting purposes
  • Organizing, preparing, and tracking necessary supplies for related programs
  • Participating in program and lesson plan development and updating the Museum’s K-12 partnership curriculum, as needed
  • Leading tours, discussions, and inquiry-based programs in the Museum galleries for various groups
  • Greeting groups at the HRM and orienting participants to the rules of the Museum
  • Researching and continuing to build the Museum’s hands-on teaching collection
  • Maintaining materials in the Museum’s “Hike the Hudson” backpacks and Art Cart, documenting their usage for reporting purposes, and assisting in developing new materials as needed
  • Assisting with researching and selecting children’s books for the Museum’s “Book Nook" and “Pop-Up Storytimes”
  • Attending exhibition training and teacher professional development sessions, as required
  • Additional administrative support for School Programs, as needed

Candidate Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in visual arts, art history, art / science / museum / science education, museum studies, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in related fields
  • Graduate degree a plus, as well as NYS or other state teaching certification
  • Ability to engage with science- and astronomy-related programs
  • Knowledge of and/or interest in American art
  • At least 2 years of Museum education, arts education, informal science education, or classroom teaching experience
  • An understanding of object- and inquiry-based teaching practices and an embrace of interdisciplinary teaching and learning ● Experience working with youth, families, schools, and adults and an understanding of child development
  • Strong organizational, communication, and administrative skills and experience
  • Proficiency in using technology (e.g.,A/V equipment) and software (Microsoft Office and Google Suite Interpersonal)
  • Ability to work closely and collaboratively with other staff, and communicate technical information clearly
  • Commitment to being an articulate and respectful representative of the museum, interacting with the general public of all ages
  • A kind, gracious, and flexible attitude, with a sense of humor.

  • Access to a personal car for travel to and from partnership schools

The New York Transit Museum (NYTM) provides walking and offsite tours at transit sites, including Old City Hall station and in neighborhoods throughout the city. Each program explores a different theme through art and building activities, design challenges, guided investigations of architectural examples, and field trips. The Summer Program Assistants provide artistic and administrative support to the Design Educators leading the Summer Programs.
